Founded in 1790, Hunters & Frankau is the UK’s leading independent cigar importer and distributor, offering an unmatched range of the finest cigar brands from many different countries.

The business operates from its HQ in London, supplying various outlets nationally and internationally including specialist tobacconists, wine merchants, restaurants, bars, pubs, hotels and newsagents. Hunter & Frankau’s range of cigars includes 22 world famous Havana brands comprising over 200 products, as well as a selection of cigars from the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Switzerland and Holland.

The customer objectives

Hunters & Frankau wanted to improve their operational workflows and efficiencies to keep them ahead of the competition, and their systems updated with that latest modern technologies. 

Kevin McGuigan, IT Manager at Hunters & Frankau begins, “It was important for us to set out a brief before approaching TSG, cataloguing what we wanted from a new system. We had priorities in terms of must-have functionality, along with the nice-to-haves.”

The business has evolved over the years and continues to do so, therefore it was vital for Hunters & Frankau to have a robust yet flexible solution, meeting specific business needs and objectives including;

  • A Warehouse Management System (WMS)
  • Improve staff efficiency
  • Provide a simple but effective workflow system

The business has a growing number of staff working in its warehouse where processes must be in place and adhered to, from receiving an order through to its delivery.

In deploying an effective warehouse management system the business hoped to subsequently improve staff productivity, reduce human error, save money, increase operational efficiencies and despatch turnaround, and essentially increase turnover.

With the project brief understood, TSG specialists recommended that the cigar importer move to Microsoft technologies to take advantage of Microsoft Dynamics NAV and its seamless integration capabilities.

Microsoft Dynamics NAV is a powerful solution with a range of flexible options and add-ons to suit the specific needs of Hunters & Frankau, both now and in the future.

TSG also proposed deploying an advanced Warehouse Management System [WMS] bolted on to the Dynamics NAV platform to improve their workflow efficiencies. With automation of posting receipts and put-aways among the many features, the WMS would substantially improve the cigar importers inbound processes by eliminating time spent manually tracking stock.

“We were aware as the business evolved that our internal processes needed more thought in terms of stock traceability and improving time spent performing specific tasks,” says Kevin.

The advanced system would provide warehouse staff with complete control of item availability in the warehouse, enabling outbound orders to flow seamlessly and provide optimal deliveries to their customers.

Further cost savings to the business would be achieved in moving from a paper-based document system to electronic. EDI [Electronic Data Interchange] integration with Dynamics NAV will help with increasing processing speeds and predominantly reduce human error.

As part of the overall solution, TSG also recommended that Hunters & Frankau protect their network by signing up to SystemCare. In doing so, their real-time stock management system, as well as back office systems would be monitored by experts to prevent the business from any system failure which would cause costly downtime.

The Dynamics NAV warehouse management system has provided the company with a robust workflow for warehouse staff, keeping them updated in real-time with stock availability to maintain optimum despatch of goods.

Kevin is pleased with how the system has improved the business, adding, “When staff began using the new system we could see within the first week how it was going to be the perfect fit for our business processes, and we’ve been delighted with the positive effect it’s had on the warehouse staff in particular. The future for TSG and Hunters & Frankau

With the latest Microsoft release of Dynamics NAV 2013, Hunters & Frankau is considering the upgrade to unlock extra functionality for their system. They are also looking at the TSG Telecoms solutions to update their telephone system.

Kevin finishes, “We have no solid commitments as yet of future projects, but we are always keen to improve our systems.”
