Wireless networking for County Council

TSG implements wireless networking for Durham County Council

Wireless networking

Durham County Council is made up of an elected assembly of 126 councillors accountable to almost 500,000 people in County Durham. The County Council is responsible for providing a wide range of public services to the people of the county. The County Council also represents and promotes the interests of County Durham when dealing with regional, national and international affairs.

DurhamNet (NewCo) is the ISP business if Durham County. They had a major issue with connectivity throughout the schools in the region. Land based circuits were not in the quantity or bandwidth needed to be able to service the schools in their catchment.

Together with the client TSG carried out terrain and LOS surveys, and trialled various wireless networking services in order to establish the wireless connection was a stable and realistic alternative to LES circuits.

After successful trials with Motorola and Proxim wireless technology, TSG developed a wireless networking specification for distances up to 15km at 10Mbs. Further to this, DurhamNet (NewCo) agreed a package of surveying, project management and installation services to extend the delivery capability of their team.

"TSG has played a key role in the development of the project and their responsiveness, flexibility and attention to detail helped to ensure that the project has succeeded."
