Tell us a little bit about your professional work history and the beginnings of TSG

I worked my way from a degree in International Relations at Keele University, to becoming a Chartered Accountant, partner in PriceWaterhouseCoopers and after a couple of other challenges to being CEO of Newcastle United PLC.

In 2003, Graham Wylie asked me to help him set up Technology Services Group Limited (‘TSG’). I’d known Graham personally since the early days of Sage and he approached me with his idea to establish a national IT services business through a buy and build strategy. Initially, we drew up the plan and I raised bank finance to match his own significant equity input and we then made the first few acquisitions. I managed to relinquish enough other business responsibilities to become full time CEO of TSG in July 2004. Needless to say, the plan proved more difficult and more expensive to deliver than we thought, but we’re now proud of what we’ve built.

I stood back from that role to become Executive Chairman in April 2021.

What is the most rewarding part about your role at TSG?

To (eventually) have created a successful, single national business with talented, committed people, a great ethos and culture with which we can all feel proud to be associated with. I’m now happy to step back and let the next generation of management lead the business forward.
