Microsoft SharePoint: The Chandler Bing Effect

I’ve just started at TSG, and I’ve found I’ve been having the same conversation with many people – friends, family, acquaintances etc.

The conversation normally goes like this:

Them: “So, how’s work?”

Me: “Great! I just started a new role.”

Them: “[Long uncomfortable pause]……What is it you do again?”

It’s the Chandler Bing effect, no one has any idea what I do for a living.

I’m a Microsoft SharePoint specialist, and I’ve worked with SharePoint for a long time. However, it’s very difficult to make people understand what SharePoint actually is.  In the past I’ve been known to settle for, “I work in IT”.

I know the capabilities of SharePoint and I know how useful it can be to a business. The reason for the difficulty in summing it up is that SharePoint can do so much. It can fulfil a lot of business needs.  There is however, a lot of techo babble and buzzwords out there which only adds to the confusion more.

If you’ve ever asked the question ‘What can I do with SharePoint?’ (and it’s a very good question), here’s a very short video of me trying to offer a decent explanation…

If you’d like to hear about it in more detail, then I’d heartily recommend signing up (for free) to our SharePoint Month webinars – these are short sharp bursts of interesting information about this business transformational tool.
